TIGER BALM
The Tiger Balm story began a century ago in Rangoon. There, a Chinese herbalist, Aw Chu Kin, established a small business called The Forever Peaceful Shop’. His sons re-discovered the recipe of a natural ointment used by Chinese emperors centuries before. One of them, Aw Boon Haw, travelled through Malaysia and Singapore selling the remarkable balm. Wherever he went, he took along a tiger - the embodiment of strength and vitality in the Last - as a symbol of its potency. When the brothers established their manufacturing base in Singapore, they naturally named the product Tiger Balm.

Vicks VapoRub was the creation of Lunsford Richardson, a homespun druggist in the small town of Greensboro, North Carolina, U S A, during the early 1890s. His customers were farmers from the surrounding countryside, and for them he mixed home remedies that he sold under the trademark of Vicks. VapoRub worked so well, he set out to market it to the world. When America was swept by two influenza epidemics between 1911 to 1919 VapoRub firmly established itself as the foremost medicine for relief of cold and flu symptoms. Today, it is one of the worlds most widely known and used cold medications.
